Sharad: Radar Sounder on the 2005 Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: SHARAD (SHAllow RADar) is a subsurface sounding radar provided by ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana) as a Facility Instrument for the 2005 Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) mission. It is designed to characterize the upper several hundred meters of the martian subsurface. As of this writing, the instrument has been integrated into the payload on the spacecraft undergoing assembly at Lockheed Martin Aerospace in Denver, CO. The protoflight model has met all of its design requirements, including a dynamic range of 50 dB (in essence, detection of a subsurface signal 50 dB weaker than the strong surface reflection). The properties of the SHARAD instrument are given in Table 1 below.

The SHAllow RADar (SHARAD) Experiment, a subsurface sounding radar for MRO
SHARAD (SHAllow RADar) is a radar for the study of the Martian subsurface provided by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) as a facility instrument on board NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter 2005 spacecraft. The scientific objective of SHARAD is the detection of water, either liquid or solid, and the profiling of subsurface ice layers in the first hundreds of meters of the Martian subsurface. Althou...

Introduction: The Shallow Radar instrument (SHARAD) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been successful at penetrating into icy deposits [1-3], but most of the rocky units are opaque to SHARAD. The main exceptions to this are the youngest major volcanic surfaces, Cerberus Fossae 2 and 3 units and Amazonis Planitia 2 north unit [4]. We suggest that these units have low radar loss becaus...

[i] SHARAD (SHAllow RADar) is a sounding radar provided by Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) as a Facility Instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. Its 20-MHz center frequency and 10-MHz bandwidth complement the lower-frequency, relatively narrower bandwidth capability of the MARSIS sounding radar. A joint ItalianU.S. team has guided the experiment development and is responsible for...
متن کاملIntegrating radar stratigraphy with high resolution visible stratigraphy of the north polar layered deposits, Mars
Shallow Radar (SHARAD) on board NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has successfully detected tens of reflectors in the subsurface of the north polar layered deposits (NPLD) of Mars. Radar reflections are hypothesized to originate from the same material interfaces that result in visible layering. As a first step towards verifying this assumption, this study uses signal analyses and geometric com...
متن کاملEagle: a Synthetic Aperture Radar Mapper for the Mars Scout Program
Background: The Mars Express and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft both carry radar sounder systems (MARSIS and SHARAD). These instruments transmit a radar signal with wavelength of meters to tens of meters, and penetrate to depths of several km in typical dry crustal rocks. Sounders, however, provide relatively coarse horizontal resolution (1-10 km), and cannot reveal detail of the near-s...
